Mo Salah’s Last Dance is Statistically the Greatest Premier League Season Ever

Mohamed Salah’s 2024/25 Premier League campaign is nothing short of extraordinary. With 25 goals and 17 assists so far, the Egyptian is putting together one of the most complete attacking seasons in Premier League history.

After last night’s victory over Newcastle, the title seems all but wrapped up. Yet, amid the record-breaking performances, a cloud of uncertainty hangs over Liverpool’s most valuable player. Salah’s contract remains unsigned, fueling speculation that he could leave Anfield this summer—an issue that former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann believes could impact the team’s future.

Hamann spoke to Slotswise exclusively to discuss Salah’s contract situation as the Egyptian is in the process of putting together the best individual season in Premier League history.

He said: “With Mo Salah now, I think he made it pretty clear that he does want to leave,” Hamann said. “Hopefully Liverpool can sort something out because he’s probably playing as well as he ever has.”

How Salah is Making Premier League History

Player Season Goals Assists Games Played Goal Contributions per Game
Mohamed Salah 2024/25 25 17 28 1.50
Luis Suárez 2013/14 31 12 33 1.30
Erling Haaland 2022/23 36 8 35 1.26
Didier Drogba 2009/10 29 10 32 1.22
Thierry Henry 2002/03 24 20 37 1.19
Andy Cole 1993/94 34 13 40 1.18
Mohamed Salah 2017/18 32 10 36 1.17
Alan Shearer 1994/95 34 14 42 1.14
Cristiano Ronaldo 2007/08 31 7 34 1.12
Robin van Persie 2011/12 30 11 38 1.08
Kevin De Bruyne 2019/20 13 20 35 0.94

Salah’s current 1.50 goal contributions per game is the highest in Premier League history. If he maintains this pace, he is projected to finish to shatter the 38 game record of 44 (Henry 2002/03 & Haaland 2022/23), and to even bypass Andy Cole’s 1993/94 season, which had 42 games.

With 10 games still to play, Salah is on 42 goal contributions, just five away from Cole’s record, and if he maintains this pace and plays every game he’ll end up with 57. There is no doubt that we are witnessing history.

Yet, his contract situation remains unresolved, and Hamann warns that this uncertainty—while not affecting him yet—could become an issue, as he chases history.

He said: “Sometimes in these situations when your future is uncertain, you want a bit of security, and that uncertainty sometimes doesn’t help,” Hamann said. “At the moment, it doesn’t seem to harm his performances, but could that affect his form late in the season?”

Hamann says that the club’s handling of Virgil van Dijk’s contract situation could have a knock-on effect on Salah’s decision.

“My gut feeling is that Van Dijk is the most likely to stay of the three players. I think there’s still a good chance with Salah, maybe a little less chance with Trent. If Van Dijk signs, it maybe gives Salah and Trent a little push to say, ‘well, if he stays, I want to stay as well.’”

In other words, Salah’s future may not just depend on him—it could be linked to other key players committing their futures to Liverpool.

Could Uncertainty Cost Liverpool?

While the Premier League title seems all but over, Liverpool are still chasing a famous treble. They have a League cup final against Newcastle coming up in March, and they will be eyeing up Champions League honours.

Liverpool fans will remember the Steven Gerrard transfer saga in 2005, when the club captain was heavily linked with a move away before ultimately deciding to stay. Hamann, who played alongside Gerrard during that period, believes the current situation is different, but the effect on the squad could be similar.

“Obviously, the players in the squad now won’t want to see Van Dijk, Trent, or Salah go,” Hamann said. “With Gerrard it was a bit different, because he was obviously contracted to Liverpool and it wasn’t about his contract running out. I don’t think it did affect the team at the time. But you know, as a player you always want the best players at the club, because it gives you a better chance to win trophies. Obviously, everybody in the dressing room was happy when Steven Gerrard decided to stay in 2005.”

The Verdict: Could This Be Salah’s Last Dance?

Speaking to TNT Sports before the Newcastle game, Salah’s comments suggested that he won’t be returning to Anfield next season.

He said: “I want fans to remember that I gave it all to the fans, I gave it all to the city. I was here, I wasn’t lazy, I just enjoyed my football and gave it all.

“I think that’s what the city is about – they give you love and you have a connection with them because you give your all.

“I just want them to remember that I was here for eight years and I gave it all.”

Salah’s contract uncertainty adds another layer of drama to an already historic season. Will he stay at Liverpool, pushing to become their greatest ever player, or will he leave after delivering one of the greatest individual seasons the league has ever seen? Either way, his legacy is undeniable.

As Hamann says: “Salah seems to be a very cool customer, and he will continue to perform at this high level.”

The only question left: for how much longer will he be doing it in a Liverpool shirt?
